Put aside your fears of missing out and get ready for a powerful set of songs from The New Hires. Blending anthemic choruses with emotional, shimmering verses, The New Hires have made it clear with their new EP that they’re a force to be reckoned with and are here to stay.

“And the fear of missing out…” is the first EP from The New Hires, and they’ve made sure that they put their best foot forward. With a little less than 10 minutes of music within this project, it’s clear that The New Hires made the most of their short runtime by putting their strengths on full display.

The EP begins with the slow melancholic chords of “Fool’s Gold”, a thoughtful piece that builds into an explosive sing-song chorus, boasting the lyrics: “I don’t care if it’s crazy, they say I’m out of my head but what do I have to lose?”. This is a clever tie-in to the EP’s title, as the fear of missing out has led most of us to think those same thoughts: “what do I have to lose?”.

We are led into a blistering guitar solo section before bringing us home to a final rendition of the chorus. In just under 5 minutes, “Fool’s Gold” manages to take the listener on an emotional journey that displays the heart and passion that went into this song.

The second and final song on this EP is a return to what previous listeners of the band might expect. Sharpshooter is an upbeat and infectious alt-rock banger that, much like its counterpart, begins with simple chords before increasing in musical and emotional complexity. In true New Hires fashion, the chorus will get stuck in your head for days to come after only one listen.

Sharpshooter comes across as a song that was written with live performance in mind. With its undeniably catchy chorus alongside a plethora of sing-along “ba ba ba’s”, it’s clear that this song is as much for the listener/audience member as it was for the band members themselves. The song culminates in a punk-influenced bridge, switching to a double-time feel before returning for a final chorus with soaring vocal embellishments added for the final run of the chorus.

The EP release show served as a clear testament to The New Hires’ ability to capture a crowd and not only write impressive songs, but perform them with ease as well. LIVE! On Elgin served as the venue for the night, which quickly sold out before the show even began. After support from local acts Futura Free and No Hits, it was time for The New Hires to debut their EP to the excited crowd.

As the band began their set of fan favourites and unreleased teasers, the entire venue felt as though the floor might fall away from the crowd’s intensity. While the EP had only been released less than 24 hours prior to The New Hires taking the stage, hearing so many fans in the crowd singing along to every word of their two freshly released songs was something to behold.

After concluding their setlist of originals, the crowd was treated to a small handful of covers to end the night in spectacular fashion. As the crowd slowly made their way out of the venue and into the snowy bustling noise of Elgin St, it was clear that “And the fear of missing out…” had spoken for itself and left all of those in attendance with a performance they won’t soon forget.
