Fiamma is a band making its mark on the Ottawa music scene. On paper, they create indie bedroom pop; however, their sound stretches beyond just those uncomplicated descriptors.
Fiamma comprises four members with a shared vision: Michael Watson, Hannah Judge, Sean Lundy, and Laura Bruno.
They aim to craft an experience with every song. The musicians in Fiamma capitalize on all the different elements that go into creating their sound. Each note, tone, and vibration is intended to introduce and develop a feeling within its listener.
Laura described this element of depth: “[i ask myself] what is it I’m saying in my song, and how can I say that through more than just the lyrics?” In this way, she is not just telling the listener a story but instead thrusting them into it to experience it for themselves.
Fiamma’s song Closer is an excellent example of adding depth to the song- Closer is an indie pop song about losing oneself- the lyrics are sad and melancholic, while the beat is delicate and clean. The juxtaposition between the two represents, in a way, the duality and complexity of human emotion.
“Nothing is ever just happy or just sad- feelings are always complicated- and that is what I want to show through my music,” she said while discussing how she is inspired by the push and pull of life.
Laura said music is how she sorts out her complex emotions. “Songs are a space,” and by looking at music through the lens of spacialization, she is able to create feelings by putting people in place.
“It’s not a sound choice I make, but an effect I want to have on people,” she said.
Fiamma came into being during the pandemic, and their earlier songs- like Closer– are indie pop. However, their more recent stuff is guitar-heavy and instrumental.
They are still cultivating their sound, which they do best through performing live shows. Their next set will be their fourth performance as a group. They will be featuring some unheard music: the setlist they are still shaping, but Laura is “most proud of [this one] so far.”
Fiamma is in an explorative stage in their career. They are developing their musical skill, their sound and their stage presence. Beyond that, though, is having the opportunity to share a new piece of themselves with their audience at each new show.
Fiamma’s music is intentional, calculated, and thoughtful. It aims to reach beyond, and the musical elements themselves act as metaphors which deepen the meaning of the lyrics.
If you are a lover of the indie genre, contemplating complex emotions or feeling the music in your soul, do not miss the upcoming Fiamma set at club SAW on September 30th.
